At 75 years young, my father continues to run several 1/2 marathons each year, as well
as the occasional marathon. Initially recommended to me by my father, Jeff
Galloway's training suggestions provide the foundation for our Ultramarathon Training
Program.
My first running book purchase and still one of my favorites, I never start a training
program without re-reading sections of this book. I used this book to prepare a
training schedule that allowed me to improve my marathon time from 4+ hours to under 3:15
in less than a year, and thus qualify for the 100th Running of the Boston Marathon in
1996.

really great! It's well organized, concise, and very comprehensive. If you are
pretty much a beginning runner, then get Galloway's book. If you already have it,
then get this book instead! OK, OK, I managed to get in my top 4 favorites.

If you're into Sheehan (he can get a bit philosophical at times), you'll like this
book. He emphasizes quality training, over quantity training, another tenet of our
training program. All of his books are destined to continue to be classics for a
long, long time.

Although a bit old, nothing in this book is out-of-date. It's a complete
encyclopedia of running and not casual reading. I actually got through it though,
and I frequently go back to it when I am looking for an answer to a specific question that
I can't find anywhere else. Unfortunately, the answers can be hard to find unless
you've read the book. Catch 22?

Pre : The Story of America's Greatest Running Legend,
Steve Prefontaine
by Tom Jordan

(20%)Paperback 2nd edition
(April 1997)
Rodale Press
A great story about an incredible athlete! No, I haven't seen the movies.
Also, this has little or nothing to do with ultrarunning specifically, but rather the
running spirit and mental toughness. Since ultrarunning tends to tax you more
mentally, rather than physically, then this book may be more appropriate after all.
Pre's edge over other runners of his time was raw mental fortitude, will power, and of
course some physical ability.

And Then the Vulture Eats You
by James R. Shapiro,
Kenny Moore, Don Kardding, Tom Hart, Ed Ayres, John L. Parker
Paperback - 163 pages (1991)
Cedarwinds Pub Co
List Price: $9.95
This title is out of print; but, if you are
interested, Amazon.com can conduct a search for the book among used bookstores and send
you an update within one to two weeks. Also, And Then the Vulture Eats You
first appeared in the April, 1989 issue of Outside magazine.
I loved the title of this book and had to get it! It was worth it. It
helps you get inside the heads of different ultra-runners. Kind of scary though....
Get this one before Running with the Legends.

Everything you ever wanted to know, and I'm sure more, about how
the body works when you're running. This reads more like a biochemistry text than a
running book. Is that good or bad?
