HISTORY OF THE
DIGITAL ROSE
Direction. Clarity. Elegance.
I chose the name Digital Rose to adopt and express the characteristics of the Compass
Rose, a familiar device found on maps. Analytically precise, yet artistically
rendered, this symbol has provided direction to adventurers and entrepreneurs for over 700
years.
The elegant colors and bold lines of the Compass Rose arise from a need for graphical
clarity. Viewing maps on a rolling ship at night, by the mere light of a flickering
lantern, voyageurs required clear visibility.
| past...THE WINDROSE |
| The crossing directional lines of a sea chart, known as rhumb lines,
originally indicated the directions of the eight major winds, eight half-winds and sixteen
quarter-winds. Originally referred to as a 'windrose', early cartographers
provided elaborate decoration to these symbols, such as the 'wind-blowers' from Greek
mythology.
The term 'rose' originates from the point where these lines intersect, resembling the
petals of a flower. |
| present...THE
COMPASS ROSE |
| With the invention of the magnetic compass in the 13th century, the
Compass Rose eventually evolved from the windrose. At first, cartographers did not
fully understand or trust magnetic variation. During the 15th to 18th centuries,
making maps became big business. This era generated some of the most decorative and
charming printed maps.
Interestingly, no absolute standard has ever existed for drafting a Compass Rose, as
each school of cartographers developed their own methods, personal designs and
signatures. |
| and future...THE
DIGITAL ROSE |
| With less expensive and more powerful technology, as well as the profound
reach and adoption of the Internet, we find ourselves in a new economy. The price of
entering our new economy: vision and cooperation.Large corporations struggle to adapt
to this new environment, fiercely competing with one another for market share.
Meanwhile, new, smaller companies quickly embrace our new economy, giving rise to a global
community based on cooperation - the distribution of goods, services, knowledge and
wealth.
Small businesses, working together, have begun to reclaim the economic landscape.
Like the pre-industrial farming communities of the past, these new businesses
thrive on opportunity and challenge. We have begun to come full circle with our
past, with our heritage, with our family-oriented values.
However, overwhelmed by rapid technical changes and a flood of information, we can
easily lose our bearings trying to keep pace. And, as with the past, we face new
technologies, competing standards, and simple misunderstandings.
Like the Compass Rose, and the windrose before it, Digital Rose offers direction and
clarity, as well as elegance, to help promote your company image. Let me help you to
navigate our new economy.
Save your time and money with my personalized Internet coaching services that cut
through 'the hype' and address your business and personal needs.
The sooner you see me, the more I can save you.
